Design and Specifications of the 1810 Half Dollar

The 1810 Half Dollar is part of the Capped Bust series, which replaced the Draped Bust design in 1807. This coin was minted during a period of significant growth and change in the young United States. It represents an important era in American coinage, as the nation was still establishing its monetary system and refining its coin designs.

The Capped Bust Half Dollar was designed by John Reich, a German immigrant who became assistant engraver at the U.S. Mint. His design was a departure from the previous Draped Bust style, featuring a more robust and distinctly American representation of Liberty.

Rarity Factors and Value Drivers

The condition of an 1810 Half Dollar has a significant impact on its value. Due to its age and circulation, finding high-grade examples is challenging. Coins in Mint State (MS) condition are particularly valuable, with prices increasing dramatically for grades MS63 and above.

Strike quality is crucial for this issue, as many examples show weakness in certain areas, particularly on the eagle’s wings and talons. Coins with strong, full strikes command a premium. Original luster is highly prized, and coins with attractive, original toning can also see increased demand and value.

Philadelphia, No Mint Mark

Mintage: 1,276,276

Rarity Scale: Scarce

Circulation Status: Limited Circulation

Preservation Rarity: Rare in grades MS65 and above, with very few specimens known in gem condition

Varieties Errors: Several varieties exist, including the 1810 O-101 (Overton-101) and 1810 O-102

Market Demand: High, especially for well-preserved examples

Die varieties play a significant role in the value of 1810 Half Dollars. Collectors often seek specific Overton varieties, with some being rarer and more valuable than others. The O-101 and O-102 varieties are among the most common, while others are considerably scarcer.

The overall eye appeal of the coin is crucial. Specimens with minimal contact marks, good luster, and attractive coloration are highly sought after. Additionally, provenance can add value, especially if the coin can be traced to a notable collection or has been featured in important auctions.
