Design and Specifications of the 1817 Half Dollar
The 1817 Half Dollar is part of the Capped Bust Half Dollar series, which was minted from 1807 to 1839. This design, created by German-born engraver John Reich, represented a significant artistic improvement over its predecessor, the Draped Bust design. The year 1817 falls within the early period of this series, during a time when the United States was experiencing rapid growth and economic expansion following the War of 1812.

Rarity Factors and Value Drivers
Condition plays a crucial role in determining the value of 1817 Half Dollars. Due to their age and extensive circulation, high-grade examples are scarce. Coins in Mint State (MS) condition, particularly MS65 and above, command significant premiums. Original surfaces, strong strikes, and attractive toning are highly desirable among collectors and can substantially increase value.
Mintage: 1,215,567
Rarity Scale: Scarce
Circulation Status: Limited Circulation
Preservation Rarity: Rare in grades MS65 and above due to heavy circulation and limited high-grade survivors
Varieties Errors: Overdate 1817/4, Punctuated Date 1817.
Market Demand: High, especially for well-preserved specimens and varieties
The 1817/4 overdate variety is particularly valuable and sought after by collectors. The Punctuated Date 1817. variety, featuring a period after the date, also carries a premium. Die states and die cracks can be of interest to specialized collectors. Provenance from notable collections can enhance value. Additionally, coins with exceptional eye appeal, luster, and strike quality often command prices well above standard market rates for their respective grades.
