Design and Specifications of the 1818 Cent

The 1818 Cent, also known as the Coronet Head Large Cent, was part of the early American copper coinage. This design, introduced in 1816, represented a significant improvement in coin production techniques and was a step towards more uniform and higher quality coinage. The 1818 issue continued the tradition of the large cent, which was the backbone of everyday commerce in early 19th century America.

Rarity Factors and Value Drivers

Condition plays a crucial role in the value of 1818 Large Cents. Due to their extensive circulation and the soft nature of copper, finding high-grade examples can be challenging. Coins in Extremely Fine (XF) condition or better are highly sought after by collectors.

The presence of original red color, even if only partial, can significantly increase the value and desirability of the coin. Conversely, environmental damage, such as corrosion or porosity, can severely impact the coin’s worth.

Philadelphia, No Mint Mark

Mintage: 3,167,000

Rarity Scale: Common

Circulation Status: Widely Circulated

Preservation Rarity: Scarce in grades MS65 and above

Varieties Errors: N9 (Normal Date), N10 (Large Date)

Market Demand: Moderate, with higher demand for high-grade specimens

Strike quality is an important factor for 1818 Large Cents. Well-struck examples with full details on Liberty’s hair and the wreath on the reverse are more valuable. The N9 and N10 varieties, while not rare, can command a premium if in high grades.

Attractive, natural toning can enhance the coin’s appeal and value. However, artificial toning or attempts to improve the coin’s appearance can negatively impact its worth. As with many early copper coins, provenance (ownership history) can also play a role in the coin’s desirability, especially for high-grade or notable examples.
