Design and Specifications of the 1824 Cent
The 1824 Cent, also known as the Coronet Head or Matron Head Cent, was part of the early copper coinage of the United States. This coin represents a transitional period in American numismatics, as the country was still establishing its monetary system and refining its coin production techniques.
The Coronet Head design, introduced in 1816, was an improvement over the previous Classic Head design. It continued to be minted until 1839, making the 1824 issue a mid-series example of this long-running type.

Rarity Factors and Value Drivers
Condition plays a crucial role in the value of 1824 Cents. Due to their age and the copper composition, many surviving examples show significant wear or environmental damage. Coins in higher grades (VF and above) command substantial premiums.
The quality of the strike can vary, affecting the coin’s appeal. Well-struck examples with full details are highly sought after. Original red color, when present, significantly enhances value, but most surviving specimens have brown coloration due to oxidation over time.
Mintage: 1,262,000
Rarity Scale: Scarce
Circulation Status: Limited Circulation
Preservation Rarity: Rare in grades MS60 and above
Varieties Errors: Normal Date, Overdate 1824/2
Market Demand: High, especially for well-preserved examples
The 1824/2 overdate variety is particularly valuable, often commanding a premium over the normal date coins. Collectors also prize examples with attractive, even toning and minimal surface marks.
Die states and varieties can affect value, with early die state examples typically being more desirable. The presence of original mint luster, even if partial, can greatly increase a coin’s worth.
As with many early copper coins, provenance can play a role in value, especially for high-grade examples with a history of belonging to notable collections.
