Design and Specifications of the 1967 Half Dollar

The 1967 Kennedy Half Dollar was part of the transitional period in U.S. coinage. It was the second year of the reduced silver content (40% down from 90%) following the Coinage Act of 1965. This change was implemented due to rising silver prices and coin shortages. The lack of mint marks was a temporary measure to discourage hoarding, which continued from 1965 to 1967.

Rarity Factors and Value Drivers

Condition plays a crucial role in the value of 1967 Kennedy Half Dollars. While common in circulated grades, specimens in Mint State (MS) condition command significant premiums. Coins grading MS65 and above are particularly desirable.

For Special Mint Set coins, original surfaces with strong luster and minimal contact marks are highly prized. The quality of strike, especially on the hair details and eagle’s feathers, can greatly impact value.

San Francisco (No mint mark)

Mintage: 1,863,344

Rarity Scale: Uncommon

Circulation Status: Not Intended for Circulation

Preservation Rarity: Common in SMS condition, rare in superb gem (SMS68 and above)

Varieties Errors: None significant

Market Demand: Moderate to High, popular among collectors of Kennedy Half Dollars

Silver content is a significant factor in the coin’s base value. Toning can add to the appeal, with attractively toned specimens often commanding premiums.

Special Mint Set coins are generally more valuable than their circulation counterparts due to their superior strike and finish. Cameo and Deep Cameo contrast on SMS coins can significantly increase their value.

While major varieties are not common for this issue, any discovered doubled die or repunched mint mark varieties could be valuable. As always, authenticity is crucial, as counterfeit Kennedy Half Dollars exist.
