Design and Specifications of the 2007 Nickel

The 2007 Nickel marked a significant return to tradition after the Westward Journey Nickel Series (2004-2006). This coin reintroduced the Monticello reverse design, which had been a staple of the Jefferson Nickel since 1938, but with a modernized obverse featuring a forward-facing portrait of Jefferson.

This new obverse design, introduced in 2006, was part of the U.S. Mint’s efforts to revitalize classic coin designs while maintaining their historical significance.

Rarity Factors and Value Drivers

The condition of 2007 Nickels significantly impacts their value, especially for circulation strikes. Coins in uncirculated condition (MS60 and above) command a premium over face value, with the premium increasing dramatically for grades MS65 and higher.

For circulation strikes, coins with full steps on the Monticello reverse are highly sought after and can command significant premiums. The presence of strong luster and absence of contact marks also positively affect value.

Proof coins are valued primarily on the depth of cameo contrast and the absence of imperfections, with Deep Cameo or Ultra Cameo designations being the most desirable.

Strike quality is particularly important for 2007 Nickels, as well-struck examples with sharp details are more desirable. The presence of full steps on the Monticello reverse can significantly increase value, especially in higher grades.

While not typically toned, any attractive natural toning on a 2007 Nickel could increase its appeal to collectors. Additionally, any major mint errors or die varieties, though rare for this year, would substantially increase the coin’s value and collectibility.

As modern coins, 2007 Nickels are readily available in most grades, which generally keeps values modest. However, superb gem examples (MS67 and above for circulation strikes, PR70 for proofs) can command significant premiums due to their scarcity and appeal to registry set collectors.
